What is Multi Domain Leadership?

The historical view of leadership is one centred on a single person; the leader. Often, we think of influential figures like kings, CEOs, presidents, or generals. Like many of these historical figures however, this view of leadership has not survived into the modern day.

Today’s leaders need to be more than just powerful figureheads, issuing orders and expecting to be obeyed. The new leader needs to hear, and be heard. To speak, and to listen. To act, and to direct. They need to manage a workforce and lead a team. To do this successfully, they need skills in many areas; or to put it differently, they need to operate in many domains.

The military has a term for modern war – multi domain operations. This refers to the simultaneous actions on land, in the air, at sea, in cyberspace, and in the minds of the people fighting or observing the battles. This concept of multiple domains can apply to leadership as well – acting as a mentor, a boss, a manager, a follower, and a visionary; all at the same time.

As society changes, so too does our approach to leadership. To stay relevant, to connect with everyone in a team, and to lead effectively, multi domain leadership is key.
